Make your own‘Togidashi’pattern chopsticks

september 30 @ 1:00 pm - 3:00 pm

Special workshop on 30th September 2017

Make your own‘Togidashi’pattern chopsticks

Urushi is natural lacquer made from the sap of the Urushi tree. It is widely used in Asian countries and in Japan as either a glue or paint.  Due to specific qualities such as: its strength, its beauty and its capacity to preserve what it covers it is used for a wide variety of things. Traditionally in Japan it is used for making products for daily use such as accessories, bowls, and certain items used in temples and shrines.

We are delighted to offer you the rare opportunity to learn more about this strong, beautiful natural material, and to work with it yourself decorating utensils you yourself can use in your daily life: chopsticks. The teacher of the workshop has prepared chopsticks with several layers of urushi which you will unveil slowly as you sharpen the surface into a decorative pattern to your own taste. This technique is called togidashi which literally translates into “sharpening until it appears”.

After the workshop you can directly take the chopsticks home to make them a part of your dinners.

Please share and join this exceptional opportunity to learn about and experience this material which has a history of being used for more than 5000 years.

We would like to inform you about the following:

  • Unfortunately it is not possible to choose the color of the chopsticks as the lacquer has already been prepared in order to use it for togidashi.
  • Even though the urushi on the chopsticks has dried, the possibility of an allergic reaction to this material remains. Therefore we recommend using gloves that will be provided during the workshop.
  • We would like to ask you to bring your own apron.
